STORY VIEWER GUIDE

Can People See Who Viewed Your Instagram Story?

Only the person who posted a story can see who viewed it — for up to 48 hours after posting. Here is how the viewer list works, what the order means, and when a screenshot sends a notification.

Who can see who viewed a story

Only the person who posted the story can see who viewed it. Open your story and swipe up — or tap the viewer icons — to see the number of viewers and their usernames. Each photo or video in a story has its own viewer list.

You can look at who has seen your story for up to 48 hours after you post it. After the first 24 hours, find it in your archive — if the story was saved to your archive: go to your profile, open the menu, tap Archive, open the story and swipe up.

What the viewer order means

Instagram does not say how the viewer list is ordered, and the order is not a ranking of who likes you most. A name near the top does not mean that person is more interested in you, and the order can change. Do not read interest or affection into a position on the list.

Do screenshots send a notification?

It depends on what you screenshot. These are three different cases — do not treat them as one rule.

Stories

Instagram’s Help Center does not publish a separate screenshot-notification rule for stories. The rules it does publish cover disappearing photos, videos and messages in direct messages (below).

View-once and allow-replay photos and videos

View-once and allow-replay photos and videos have screenshot and screen-recording protections. These protections differ from screenshot notifications for disappearing chat messages. Do not assume that all Instagram messages follow the same rule.

Disappearing messages and vanish mode

You receive a notification if Instagram detects a screenshot of a disappearing message, including messages sent in vanish mode.

What Instagram does not show

Instagram does not show who visited your profile — there is no list of profile visitors. Business and creator accounts can see aggregate trends in Insights, such as how many accounts a post reached, but not the names of individual visitors.

Instagram also does not show who viewed someone else’s story: only the person who posted a story can see its viewer list. Saving a story as a highlight keeps the story itself visible after 24 hours. The viewer list is still only available for up to 48 hours after you post the story.

What this site does not do

This viewer cannot show who viewed your story, or anyone else’s viewer list. It only shows available public stories. To see who viewed your story, check the viewer list in the Instagram app as described above.
